Grimm, Suits, Covert Affairs, Hannibal, and Defiance coming to Amazon Prime

Today Amazon.com announced that they have finalized a deal with NBC/Universal for adding more exclusive content to Amazon Prime.

The following are launching today:

  • Grimm – Season 1
  • Suits – Season 1
  • Covert Affairs – Season 1 & 2

Coming later this year:

  • Hannibal

Coming next year:

  • Defiance

They go on to say that Amazon Prime will be the exclusive subscription service for streaming all these hit shows for the next 4 years and that they are adding fan favorites like: Smash; Eureka; Warehouse 13, and Alphas.

While I realize that this is really just an advertisement to get people to sign up for Prime [Which I do not have, nor want], it really struck me that 4 years is a really long time for an exclusivity contract in this day and age. I feel like NBC/Universal is making a mistake. I want Ala carte programing… consumers want ala carte programming. We [the consumers] shouldn’t have to subscribe to multiple services monthly to be able to watch the programming that we want.

Wake up and smell the coffee beg mediacompanies… cable companies are dying. Being able to pick and choose what we’re going to watch when we are going to watch it is the new reality. There will not be one content provider to rule them all, so start working together,

BOOK: Inferno and Magician’s End

Today I placed yet another Amazon order. My wife tells me that she is addicted… but really I feel like I order from Amazon monthly like clock work.

Here’s what I ordered today:

Inferno by Dan Brown (Author of Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons). Summary: In the heart of Italy, Harvard professor of symbology, Robert Langdon, is drawn into a harrowing world centered on one of history’s most enduring and mysterious literary masterpieces . . . Dante’s Inferno.

Anyway, for those who know me I’ve been an avid reader of Feist since first reading Magician: Apprentice in the late 80s (maybe it was the early 90s… I vaguely think that maybe Tthew introduced me to it circa 92).

Magician’s End (Book 3 of the Chaoswar Saga) by Raymond E. Feist. Summary: Thirty years ago, Raymond E. Feist wrote his first novel, Magician, a story about an orphan boy named Pug who is thrust by a war into captivity in an alien world, only to rise from slavery to become a Master Magician. Magician introduced readers to Midkemia and the Riftwars, an epic series of battles between Good and Evil that have scarred this remarkable realm for generations. Now, after twenty-nine books (authored and coauthored), Feist delivers the crowning achievement of his renowned bestselling career: Magician’s End, the final chapter of the Chaoswar Saga and the climax of his extraordinary Riftwar Cycle.

Ender’s Game Official Trailer #1 (HD) Harrison Ford

Released the other day is the Official Ender’s Game trailer. Although I posted on Google+ about it, I figured that I should also post about it here. Ender’s Game is a Science Fiction novel set in at a non-descriptive future date in Earths History.

Although I read this book many many years ago for the first time, and parts of it have always stayed with me. I don’t think that I fully grasped some of the [looking back] adult themes through out the book. But since then I have re-read it, matured, and speculated. I’ve read most of the follow up books as well and highly recommend reading it before the movie comes out! 🙂

BOOK: “The Ocean at the End of the Lane” by Neil Gaiman

My favorite author Neil Gaiman has a new book called “The Ocean at the End of the Lane” coming out in mid June (which is just over 9 weeks and 3 days as of this writing). Amazon has it available for pre-order now and I figured that I should mention this because I just pre-ordered my own copy. 🙂
The book description from Amazon as well as from Neil’s site reads: "A brilliantly imaginative and poignant fairy tale from the modern master of wonder and terror, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is Neil Gaiman’s first new novel for adults since his #1 New York Times bestseller Anansi Boys. This bewitching and harrowing tale of mystery and survival, and memory and magic, makes the impossible all too real…" (source)

Vol 1
Back in mid February I wrote about this amazing graphic novel series called Unwritten, well this morning I got an email from Amazon telling me that my order of Unwritten volumes 5 through 7 has finally shipped. Volume 7’s release date was yesterday so I have been waiting [not so] patiently since placing the order for it to get here. Now I know there the waiting is almost over, time to re-read the first four!

"Probably the most important reference point is the autobiography
of Christopher Milne – who is famous as the Christopher Robin of the Winnie
the Pooh books. Milne grew up feeling that his father had stolen his childhood
from him, turned a profit from it and then given it back to him in a form he
couldn’t use."

Who Knew

So I was bored tonight waiting for my roommate to get home so that we could go to dinner. I had this idea for a Doctor Who logo image thingy… and started playing with an existing logo. This is version 2 after I did some touch ups.

XBMC 12 : Advanced Launcher : Netflix no sound fix

So since I updated to XBMC 12 (Frodo) Netflix hasn’t worked quite right. It would load, it would stream, but it wouldn’t play sound, and well thats a game stopper.

I have sound in XBMC. If I logged over to the desktop I have sound when I open a webbrowser and load youtube.com to play something. But if XBMC is running (either by launching it from the desktop or booting into it) I wouldn’t get any sound when using Advanced Launcher to load Netflix.

So as far as I can tell XBMC is grabbing control of the sound hardware and not playing nice with other applications. So how do I get it to play nice? Well I could probably spend some time to delve into customizing my .asoundrc, I can google the problem some more, or I can revisit the first thread I read

Linux HOW-TO The Complete Linux N00bs’ Guide To Installing ZSNES on XMBCbuntu

Specifically post #52. This sentence got me to thinking, “i solved this by changing my audio output device to HDA Nvidia, HDMI1 in the system settings of xbmc.” Now while I don’t have an NVIDIA card, perhaps changing the audio output device, and leaving the audio pass through device might fix my problem.

You will find this under:
System -> System -> Audio output

Sure enough now when I launch Netflix from XBMC I have sound. Now I can watch House of Cards. 🙂

Yesterday I got a package in the mail from Amazon containing Unwritten volumes 1 through 4. Strangely enough this is the first time that I have ever ordered something that Amazon has suggested for me, and DAMN I am so glad that I did! The basic premise of where the story starts can be summarized as: “If J.K. Rowling has a son named Harry, and wrote her now uber famous books Harry Potter books using his likeness, and then disappeared mysteriously…. what would come next?”. Although the Harry Potter analogy seemingly fits in an interview with the author Mike Carey (published over at scifipulse.net) he is quoted as saying:

"Probably the most important reference point is the autobiography
of Christopher Milne – who is famous as the Christopher Robin of the Winnie
the Pooh books. Milne grew up feeling that his father had stolen his childhood
from him, turned a profit from it and then given it back to him in a form he
couldn’t use."

I quickly tore through the first book, then the next, and the next only to realize that it was nearly 1:30am. I had to force myself to stop reading and go to bed so that I could make it to work the next day. If you like Fables Vol. 1: Legends in Exile (New Edition) (Fables (Graphic Novels))Fables Vol 1 then check out Unwritten!

Vol 4

I‘ll be ordering the next three after I publish this article. Here are links to them in case you want to check them out also. Please note that Amazon says that Volume 7 will not be released until April 2, 2013, but the Vertigo web site says March 27, 2013.
