Yan Wang

Yan Wang, also known as Yama in Chinese mythology, is the ruler of Diyu, the Chinese underworld, and the judge of the dead. Originating from Indian Buddhist Yama, Yan Wang was incorporated into Chinese folk religion and Daoism, becoming the arbiter who decides the fate of souls after death. He is often depicted as a stern figure wearing official robes and a crown, seated in a judicial position, holding a judge’s tablet or staff. Yan Wang presides over courts of hell, assisted by minor judges and guardians, administering punishments appropriate to the deeds committed in life. His role reflects Chinese beliefs about morality, cosmic order, and the afterlife.
