Artemis

Artemis was one of the most widely venerated deities of ancient Greece, revered as the virgin goddess of the hunt, wild nature, childbirth, and the moon. Daughter of Zeus and Leto and twin sister of Apollo, she embodied both protection and peril: guardian of young women and animals, yet swift to punish those who violated her sacred laws. Worship of Artemis ranged from rural shrines to major cult centers such as Ephesus, where her identity blended with older fertility goddesses. Over time, her image evolved from a strictly local nature deity into a pan-Hellenic symbol of independence, restraint, and the untamed world beyond civilization.
