Hel is a central figure in Norse mythology, ruling over Helheim, the realm where those who die of illness or old age reside. She is the daughter of the god Loki and the giantess Angrboda, and her domain was assigned to her by Odin as part of the cosmic order. Described as half living and half corpse-like, Hel’s appearance reflects her role as a liminal being between life and death. Unlike the fiery underworlds of other traditions, Helheim was a cold, somber place, emphasizing inevitability rather than punishment. Hel personified the Norse understanding of death as a natural and inescapable fate, tied closely to destiny and the coming of Ragnarök.
