server upgraded

You may have noticed that the site is serving a lot faster recently. On Jan 23rd 2015 I migrated the site from my old server to my new server. The old server was an old HP Proliant ML350 with two (2) Intel (R) XEON(TM) 3.4Ghz processors with 2 cores each (2mb cache), 2 GB of DDR2 400mhz ram. The new machine is a virtual which has five (5) Intel(R) Xeon(R) 2.67Ghz processor cores (20mb cache) and 8 GB of DDR3 1333mhz.

Dell PowerEdge 840: fix for memory limited to 256

So generally when I run across something at work that I think "hey someone else might have this same problem" I generally try to remember to post about it here at tmib.net. Sadly I am pretty bad at remembering to do it on a time and regular basis. I have been playing with Google+ recently and although I have been posting updates about there on there, that means that I am neglecting this page more.

New Car 2010

So since my last car died on the highway doing 75 mph on the way to Casa De Dolph I have been saving for a new car. I've been watching the Car Auction, and checking some dealerships for something that I like and can afford. A while back The Garbos family went on vacation to Florida and I got to drive their cars for a week. I found that I really liked the way that Sir Aeryck's car drove, but didn't like the street noise that it made (which I think is due to him badly needing a front end alignment).

<del>Spring</del> Winter Cleaning

Most of you probably know that I squirrel away a metric shit ton of crap that (I feel) other people would never save. I have an old Surround Sound system (two of them actually), 10 old Hard Drives (not in computers), mouse pads (who uses those anymore?), cords, cables, 6 extra (older) video cards, 4+ sound cards... and lots lots more.

So last night I started trashing things. Here is a list of the things that are free to any friend who wants them, first come first served:

  • 2 surround sound systems
  • 1 VCR

wetware incoming

There is an article over on Slashdot that caught my attention today, about robots being controlled by the human brain. Cybernetics have always intrigued me from Gibson to Cyberpunk 2013 (1988) to War Games (1983) to "ghost in the machine" to the well known Matrix Trilogy. All of these have have pieces or parts of what I visualize our future to encompass and the scary realities that implies.

New Hardware

I just got a new motherboard, the Asus Crosshair. I decked it out with a shiny new AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 6000+, and 2 Gigs of GSKill DDR2 800. Imagine my surprise when after installing all the hardware the Windows XP Pro installer continuously crashes with a few % left on the install. Not once or twice, but four times in a row. Talk about frustrating!
